Description
Ajax the Bald Eagle arrived at Grandfather Mountain on Aug. 26, 2015. He came to us from the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, Fla. Ajax was found on a golf course in Florida, where he had fallen from his nest. The fall left him with a broken clavicle and humerus in his wing and broken femur in his leg. He was taken to the raptor center in order to be given medical care in hopes of recovery and to eventually be released back to the wild. Unfortunately, his injuries did not heal well enough for him to be able to fly long distances. Therefore, he was brought here to live at Grandfather Mountain.
It took a little while for Ajax to get to know his new home, but he has settled in nicely. He can often be seen flying to different perches in the habitat. He is also very vocal and can be heard making noises throughout the day. He is especially vocal first thing in the morning, when the keepers are walking down to feed. The keepers like to think he is telling them good morning, but more than likely he is telling them to get away and leave him alone. Ajax spends most of his day harassing his keepers and people-, squirrel- or bird-watching from one his perches.
