SUMMARY:55th-Annual Girl Scout Day
DESCRIPTION:Girl Scouts are invited to join the park’s naturalists for a fun-filled learning adventure on Grandfather Mountain. Plus\, all Girl Scouts and troop leaders are admitted free with proof of membership (all or part of a uniform or a troop roster with the leader’s name on it)\, and family members will receive discounted admission ($1 off child admission and $2 off adult admission). Advance reservations for park admission are not required\, meaning scouts\, troop leaders and family members are welcome to arrive the day of the event without admission tickets already in hand. \nTips for making your visit with us fun and comfortable: \n\nPlease carpool. We are open to the public on Girl Scout Day\, and parking may be limited.\nDress for mountain weather: wind\, rain\, cold temperatures. We can be 10+ degrees cooler than your home community. Bring waterproof\, windproof jackets\, sneakers / athletic closed-toe shoes. NO crocs\, sandals or flipflops please.\nBring a reusable water bottle…Reduce\, Reuse\, Recycle. We have two water-bottle refill stations. They are located in the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery lobby (behind the bear statue) and the Top Shop first floor.\nPack your own lunch to avoid waiting in line at Mildred’s Grill. Lines can get very long around lunchtime\, especially on busy Saturdays in the fall.\nTroop leaders\, your scouts can complete some steps toward earning a few badges. See the program schedule for badge suggestions. We do not award or provide any badges from Grandfather Mountain.\n\nThe day has a robust schedule of simultaneous offerings (which may be subject to change due to weather or other factors).

SUMMARY:Animal Enrichment Day
DESCRIPTION:On Animal Enrichment Day\, guests see firsthand how Grandfather Mountain cares for its resident animals. An enrichment is a special treat\, new toy or even an unfamiliar scent given to the animals to break up their routines and help keep them active and intellectually stimulated. Watch enrichment demonstrations\, talk directly with keepers and participate in family-oriented games and crafts. Included with admission. Activities kick off at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery and adjacent Wildlife Habitats. \nCan’t come to the event but still want to provide a special treat for Grandfather animals? Those interested in gifting them some of their favorite items can do so by checking out the mountain’s animal enrichment wish list featuring appropriate toys and supplies. Donors can purchase an item online and have it delivered straight to Grandfather Mountain for immediate enjoyment. \nAnimal lovers can also contribute through the mountain’s Adopt-an-Animal Program. Honorary adopters receive a photo of their animal\, certificate of adoption\, informational sheet about the animal’s life and more!

SUMMARY:Hawk Watch
DESCRIPTION:All throughout September\, guests are invited to join the mountain’s naturalists as they count and celebrate the annual spectacle of fall raptor migration. Participants can observe the migration from viewing locations on Linville Peak (across the Mile High Swinging Bridge) and Half Moon Overlook (the first major overlook when entering the park). Included with admission. \nRaptors are birds of prey\, such as hawks\, eagles\, owls and vultures. The telltale signs of the raptor are sharp talons\, a hooked upper bill and keen eyesight. While some raptors remain in place during winter\, most will travel south\, where food is more abundant. Because it sits along the eastern escarpment of the Appalachian Mountains\, and its rocky peaks generate strong thermal uplifts and allow excellent visibility\, Grandfather Mountain is a prime viewing spot for this phenomenon. \nPerhaps the most dramatic visual display comes courtesy of the broad-winged hawk\, which migrates in groups of hundreds or thousands\, called kettles. Those sightings are most common around the second or third week of September. Grandfather Mountain is one of more than 300 Hawk Watch sites officially designated by the Hawk Migration Association of North America. \nBeyond nature putting on quite a show\, Hawk Watch serves a vital purpose. The annual tallies amassed from Grandfather Mountain and other locations are crucial in tracking hawk populations and migration routes over time. This data proves instrumental in making informed land management decisions. Between both volunteer and staff time\, more than 900 hours are invested in Hawk Watch at Grandfather annually. \nGrandfather Mountain is welcoming volunteers to aid in the official count. Volunteers must attend a mandatory orientation session to participate. Registration is required. Those interested should contact hawkwatch@grandfather.com. \nRead more about Hawk Watch.

SUMMARY:Creatures of the Night and Bonfire Delight
DESCRIPTION:Embrace your nocturnal side at Grandfather Mountain through Creatures of the Night and Bonfire Delight\, the park’s after-hours program where guests enjoy rare after-dark tours\, fireside tales and a chance to meet the park’s nighttime residents. \nThe evening begins around the glow of a bonfire at the Woods Walk Picnic Area as night falls. Guests will then have the opportunity to partake in three unique experiences as the group splits up and alternates between the different parts of the mountain. These activities include a trek (via shuttle) to atop the mountain at the Mile High Swinging Bridge\, as well as a visit to the Mildred the Bear Animal Habitats for a behind-the-scenes tour in which guests get to experience the mountain in a similar fashion as its nocturnal critters. The tour is conducted using red-light flashlights\, with an emphasis placed on the guests’ sensory experience while getting up close with the park’s bears\, otters\, elk and cougars. An educational focus is also placed on how the animals may use their senses of smell or eyesight to navigate or hunt at night. \nGroups will then descend back to the Woods Walk Picnic Area to gather around the fire\, roast s’mores and hear folktales from one of the mountain’s naturalists or educators. \nHours are 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The event is open to 50 participants\, and tickets are $50 for general admission or $42 for Bridge Club members. Tickets will go on sale on Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. \nBridge Club Members\, click here to purchase tickets.\nYou will need to use your Bridge Club member number (located on your card below the barcode) to purchase. \nNon-Bridge Club Members\, click here to purchase tickets. \nRain Date – Please Read and Make Sure You Understand This Important Info\nThis event has a rain date of Oct. 3\, if needed\, meaning that the event could happen Sept. 26 or Oct.3. There will be no refunds given if the event is moved to the rain date. Participants will be notified by noon the day of the event regarding if the decision has been made to move Creatures of the Night to the rain date. \nRefunds will be issued if the event is canceled for both Sept. 26 and the rain date of Oct. 3.\nTicket sales will end on Sept. 26 at 12 p.m. or when the event sells out. \nPlease note: This event is for individuals eight years of age and older. \nParticipants should be prepared for a variety of the mountain’s weather conditions. It is recommended that they bring a rain jacket\, gloves and additional layers of clothing. Guests should also wear appropriate shoes or hiking boots in order to be comfortable while exploring the mountain’s rugged terrain. \nRed-light flashlights are given out\, but guests are also welcome to bring their own. Participants must bring their own s’more-making ingredients. S’more-making sticks are provided\, in addition to light refreshments\, such as apple cider and hot chocolate. \nRefunds/Cancellations\nThe majority of Grandfather Mountain events generally sell out and have a waiting list. SUMMARY:Adult Field Course: Appalachian Woodcraft
DESCRIPTION:The hardy settlers who made these mountains home were resourceful and made what they needed from what was at hand\, and what was at hand was wood. We will examine the types of things Appalachian people have made for themselves from the forests around them like chairs\, bowls\, spoons\, tool handles and more. We will also observe the tools they used to make these items. After taking a walk through the forest which was the pioneer’s lumber yard\, where we will identify trees and some of their uses\, we will focus on a hands-on project – each participant will make an example of that ubiquitous piece of pioneer woodcraft\, the hook. Made from a small\, forked tree branch\, often of rhododendron\, these hooks were found in homes\, barns and outbuildings to hang cloths\, tools\, horse harness and more on the wall in an organized fashion. \nJason Lonon is a craftsman and teacher living and working in the same valley his ancestors have called home since the 1840s. Concurrent to serving an apprenticeship in traditional woodworking\, Jason began blacksmithing as a teenager in the late 1990’s. Today\, Jason and a team of highly skilled craftsmen produce a line of specialty carving tools for traditional woodworkers. SUMMARY:Grandfather Presents: Buddy Huffaker and Stan Temple
DESCRIPTION:Buddy Huffaker joined the Aldo Leopold Foundation in 1996 as a seasonal intern and has served as Executive Director since 1999.  During his tenure\, the foundation has grown into a national conservation organization with international reach\, realizing the potential of a Land Ethic. \nThrough educational and on-the-ground initiatives\, Buddy’s leadership of the foundation furthers the Leopold family’s enduring legacy—a commitment to care for nature and inspire others to do the same. Buddy led the construction of the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center\, a testament to energy efficiency and sense of place. The building is certified LEED Platinum and constructed from trees planted by Aldo Leopold and his family. \nHe leads the preservation of the Leopold Shack & Farm\, a National Historic Landmark and setting of Leopold’s masterpiece\, “A Sand County Almanac\,” as well as land care of the surrounding 4\,000-acre Leopold-Pines Conservation Area. He produced the Emmy Award-winning documentary “Green Fire” and supported ten different foreign translations of Leopold’s famous book. Buddy’s leadership in the conservation movement includes service on state and federal advisory committees and participation in three White House Conferences on conservation and environmental education. \nDr. Stanley A. Temple is the Beers-Bascom Professor Emeritus in Conservation in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For 32 years he held the academic position once occupied by Aldo Leopold\, and during that time he won every teaching award for which he was eligible. He and his students have helped save many of the world’s endangered species and the habitats on which they depend. \nHe is currently a Senior Fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation\, where he leads crane tours and introduces Future Leaders Fellows to Leopold’s history\, phenology\, and wildlife ecology. He has also been a core contributor to the yearly Wisconsin Phenology Calendar. He has received conservation awards from the Society for Conservation Biology\, The Wildlife Society\, and Wisconsin Society for Ornithology. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithologists’ Union\, American Association for the Advancement of Science\, and Wisconsin Academy of Sciences\, Arts and Letters. He has been President of the Society for Conservation Biology and Chairman of the Board of The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame in 2020. \nThe Aug. 20 presentation is titled “Aldo Leopold’s Legacy: A conversation on land ethic and conservation.” Join a fireside chat with Huffaker\, Temple (joining virtually) and Jesse Pope\, president and CEO of Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation on endangered species and the land ethic. Temple will share stories from his lifetime of work on conservation efforts to save endangered species across the world\, including one right here at Grandfather Mountain. Huffaker and Pope will chat about Leopold’s Land Ethic today\, why it continues to be important and what challenges are being faced at Grandfather. \nConsidered by many to be the father of wildlife ecology and modern conservation\, Aldo Leopold was a forester\, philosopher\, conservationist\, educator\, writer and outdoor enthusiast. Among Aldo Leopold’s best-known ideas is the “land ethic\,” which calls for an ethical\, caring relationship between people and nature. This land ethic continues to inform the work\, values and goals at the Aldo Leopold Foundation today\, just as it informs the work of countless individuals and organizations worldwide. \nAldo Leopold’s “A Sand County Almanac” will be on sale at the event. \nFirst published by Oxford University Press in 1949\, Aldo Leopold’s “A Sand County Almanac” has become a conservation classic\, selling over 2 million copies worldwide and being translated into 15 languages. The Aldo Leopold Foundation’s mission is to foster a land ethic through the legacy of Aldo Leopold. Inspired by his profound vision\, the organization seeks to cultivate an understanding and appreciation of our relationship with the environment on all levels\, be it individuals or entire communities.
