SUMMARY:Grandfather Presents: Nature’s Song of Renewal: Ecological Resilience After Helene
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a compelling panel discussion that explores nature’s resilience after Hurricane Helene\, with powerful findings and updates one year later. The event will open with meteorologist Brad Panovich setting the stage of the storm’s path and record-breaking impacts on our region. From there\, a panel discussion with Panovich\, wildlife biologist Marquette Crockett and geologist Philip Prince will provide insights into key questions such as how the natural world changed because of Helene\, what we’ve learned from the storm and what findings may still be to come. The panelists will share their expertise and research from their fields of study and reflect on how extreme weather continues to shape our environment. Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation President and CEO Jesse Pope will moderate the discussion. \nFollowing the talk in the Wilson Center’s Classroom in the Clouds\, eventgoers will experience some social time with heavy hors d’oeuvres catered by Stonewalls and the opportunity to mingle with other attendees and the panelists. A nature-inspired concert by traveling composer/performer Ben Cosgrove will then take place at the Williams Outdoor Learning Space. (The Classroom in the Clouds will be the rain location for the concert.) \nBen Cosgrove explores themes of landscape\, place and environment with his music. Described by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter … [using] his piano as a paintbrush\,” Cosgrove has performed in every U.S. state except for Delaware\, collaborated with groups ranging from rock bands to research scientists\, contributed music to several radio and film projects (including the recent Ken Burns documentary “The American Buffalo”) and held residencies and fellowships with institutions including NASA\, the National Park Service\, the National Forest Service\, Harvard University\, Middlebury College\, the Schmidt Ocean Institute and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology. \nDuring the event\, Cosgrove will debut a song inspired by time spent at Grandfather Mountain. \nPanelists:\nBrad Panovich has been working for WCNC-TV in Charlotte since 2003. He is the chief meteorologist and previously spoke at a Grandfather Presents in 2023. \nHe has a passion for weather and science education. Panovich holds a bachelor’s degree in meteorology from The Ohio State University. He is a certified broadcast meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society and a member of the National Weather Association. He has won several awards for his work\, including two Emmys and “The American Meteorological Society Broadcast Meteorologist of the Year” in 2017. He is also an adjunct professor within the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s meteorology program. \nPanovich is not only a meteorologist\, but also a social media influencer. He has over 600\,000 followers on Facebook\, Twitter\, Instagram and YouTube\, where he posts daily weather updates\, videos\, live streams and interactive Q&A sessions. He is known for his engaging and informative style\, as well as his use of humor and emojis. He is also an advocate for environmental issues around climate change and renewable energy. \nMarquette Crockett is the Highlands of Roan stewardship director for Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC). She received a BS in Biology from Lincoln Memorial University and an MS in Biological Sciences from East Tennessee State University\, where she studied salamander communities in East Tennessee. \nShe has over 15 years of wildlife management and planning experience in the mountains\, including working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a refuge biologist at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in West Virginia. \nCrockett joined SAHC staff in 2014\, where she leads stewardship work on almost 12\,000 acres of SAHC preserves in the Highlands of Roan. She coordinates multi-agency and volunteer efforts to restore and protect the globally rare grassy bald habitats found on Roan Mountain and currently serves as co-chair of the Southern Appalachian Spruce Restoration Initiative. \nCrockett received the North Carolina Wildlife Federations Governor’s Conservation Achievement Award for “Public Lands Conservationist” in May 2025. \nPhilip Prince\, a native of Greenville\, S.C.\, graduated from Furman University in 2004. After two years of work in environmental consulting\, he began a PhD at Virginia Tech in 2006\, finishing his doctoral studies on Appalachian landscape evolution in 2011. \nAfter teaching at Virginia Tech until 2016 and spending two years with the Virginia Geological Survey in Charlottesville\, Prince returned to upstate South Carolina in late 2019 to begin work in landslide mapping with Appalachian Landslide Consultants out of Asheville. \nHe is active in both applied and research-focused work in the southern Appalachians\, splitting time today between landslide studies and geologic mapping in southwest Virginia. DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about non-native invasive species that can threaten our native flora and fauna and see different management strategies in action. After exploring the techniques Grandfather Mountain Natural Resources staff use to promote native species in the park\, we’ll head into the woods for hands-on experience removing invasive plants. Participants will learn non-native species identification\, management practices that can be used at home and how some invasive “weeds” can have practical (even culinary) uses! \nLeigh Ann Emery has served as an Interpretive Park Guide for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation since 2022. Originally from Charlotte\, N.C.\, Leigh Ann graduated from Lees-McRae College with a degree in Wildlife Biology in 2019. She is an NAI Certified Interpretive Guide and a Certified North Carolina Environmental Educator. Leigh Ann has an immense passion for all aspects of nature\, often spending her time exploring Grandfather Mountain and sharing that passion with anyone who will listen. \nWill Bennett graduated from Appalachian State University with a Masters in Geography in 2024 and surveyed the Town of Boone property for invasive plants to create an invasives management plan for the town. DESCRIPTION:Join Mattie Decker\, a certified forest therapy guide for a relaxing 2 to 2.5-hour stroll through the forest at Grandfather Mountain. Through a series of invitations\, you will have an opportunity to focus on being present in the moment\, deepening your connection with nature and community and enjoying the many gifts nature has to offer. \n“Forest bathing” is a walk in nature during which your guide will share mindfulness practices and invitations designed to connect you more deeply to your inner landscapes as well as the world around you. Inspired by shinrin-yoku\, (literally ‘forest bath’) the Japanese art of immersing oneself in a forest environment\, forest bathing walks invite guests to spend time in nature in a way that invites healing for us\, as well as our fraught ecosystems\, and our community. \nDr. Mattie Decker\, a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT). Mattie is also a mindfulness teacher\, a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate and a retired professor of education. She is also certified in wilderness medicine and first aid. Mattie says\, “The forest is the therapist. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This Educator Workshop is intended specifically for educators — not the general public. \nThis workshop is open to individuals studying for the NC Environmental Education Certification or those needing CE Credits to maintain their certification and will focus on salamanders in North Carolina. \nHosted by Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation’s own Education and Interpretation staff\, Michelle Malalang and Cooper Barnwell\, this workshop will focus on the various types of salamanders in North Carolina\, specifically those found in Western North Carolina. We will cover life cycles\, habitats\, identification\, anatomy and much more\, and hopefully spend time outdoors looking for salamanders. Participants will also test out activities they can take back to their classrooms. \nThe program is open to all interested educators. All participants qualify for CEU and EE Criteria II or III credits. \nThis workshop is free to attend\, although advance registration is required. Limited to 25 participants. Participants will be introduced to concepts of general geology\, the shape of the land surface within the Grandfather region\, how we measure and use geologic structures to interpret rocks\, how orientations of rock units can provide us insights on the structure of larger regions\, how we use rocks to visualize the past environments where they originally formed and\, finally\, how we utilize these pieces to form a story of how Earth history transpired in a given area. \nAnthony Love is the research operations manager for the department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Appalachian State University. His research is based on how structures and chemical compositions of meteorites inform our knowledge of the early history of our solar system. SUMMARY:Adult Field Course: Landscape Potential: Approaches to Ecological Landscape Design
DESCRIPTION:Consider the performance of your home landscape. Would you describe it as a fit\, functional work of art that reflects your lifestyle and encourages outdoor activity? If not\, join landscape architect\, Preston Montague\, for a design workshop that will help you make informed decisions about issues facing you in the landscape. \nPreston will present principles of ecological landscape design he applies in his practice as a professional landscape architect. Participants will learn about the ecosystem services they may design into their outdoor spaces that will boost resources for pollinating insects\, birds and other wildlife. Preston will provide training on planting design that draws from both principles of fine art\, as well as landscape ecology. Participants are encouraged to bring some of their most pressing landscape challenges and aspirations (via photos) to the workshop for Preston to consider. \n \nPreston Montague is an artist\, educator and landscape architect who developed a passion for the natural world while growing up in the rural foothills of Virginia. He works in Durham\, N.C.\, focusing on projects that spark curiosity about nature and encourage stronger relationships between people and their environment. DESCRIPTION:In addition to seeing Grandfather’s mascot\, Millie the Bear\, escort this year’s holiday tree through the Entrance Gate and up the park road to the Wilson Center\, visitors can also take part in snowflake-themed crafts while enjoying hot chocolate and candy canes. \nThe hour-long event begins at 11 a.m. and is included with park admission. The tree\, which will be harvested on Thursday\, Nov. 20\, is from Mountain Top Fraser Fir farm in Newland\, N.C. Owner Larry Smith has previously supplied trees to the White House\, North Carolina State Capitol and other prominent government buildings and residences. \nThe full schedule for the celebration is below. \n\n11 a.m. | Millie the Bear escorts the tree through the Grandfather Mountain Entrance Gate. Guests are welcome to park at an overlook or parking lot along the road to wave to Millie as she and the tree make their way up to the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery!\n11 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Hot Chocolate and Candy Cane Bar and Snowflake Craft Table open at the Wilson Center.\n11:10 a.m. | Millie and the tree arrive at the Wilson Center. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This Educator Workshop is intended specifically for educators — not the general public. \nGrowing Up WILD is an early childhood program that builds on children’s sense of wonder about nature and invites them to explore wildlife and their habitats\, with an emphasis on promoting aquatic resource appreciation and stewardship. Through a wide range of activities and experiences\, Growing Up WILD provides an early foundation for developing positive impressions about nature and lifelong social and academic skills. This workshop is oriented towards formal and nonformal educators who work with children ages 3-7. Participants trained in Growing Up WILD will receive a free Growing Up WILD activity guide and qualify for CEU credits\, training hours\, or NC Environmental Education Certification credits. \nInstructors: Tanya Poole (N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission Outreach Education Specialist) and Michelle Malalang (GMSF Education Specialist) \nRegistration\nThis workshop is free to attend\, although advance registration is required. SUMMARY:Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:A total solar eclipse\, one of nature’s most spectacular sights\, is coming to North America on April 8. Weather permitting; a partial eclipse will be visible at Grandfather Mountain. According to sources\, approximately 87% of the sun will be obscured in this region. The best viewing time will be between 2-4 p.m. \nAll Daily Programs (other than Keeper Talks) on April 8 will make thematic ties to solar and lunar eclipses. Daily Programs are included with park admission. \nIn addition\, a designated area to enjoy the eclipse will be set up. The location of this area will be determined the day of the event\, taking wind and other factors into consideration. Chairs will be welcome at this location. Chairs will not be allowed on Linville Peak. \nSolar eclipse glasses will be needed to view the event. The first 100 guests on April 8 will receive a pair of solar eclipse glasses for free with their admission. The glasses will also be on sale in the mountain’s gift shops that day. \nWhat is a Solar Eclipse?\nA solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth\, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some area. A total solar eclipse is when the moon completely blocks the face of the sun. The sky will darken\, as if it were dawn or dusk.

You’ll discover some of the park’s nighttime wonders\, watch a stunning sunset (weather permitting) and experience the mountain as never before! \nThe evening starts atop Grandfather Mountain at the Mile High Swinging Bridge\, where participants can explore and observe sunset from this lofty vantage point. During this time\, park educators will be on hand to discuss the unique flora and crepuscular (active during twilight) fauna that call Grandfather home. \nIn-park transportation is provided. Each Grandfather by Night event is limited to 24 participants. Advance registration is required. Please note: This event is for individuals eight years of age and older. \nWe are offering two versions of our Grandfather by Night series this year\, Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike and Grandfather by Night: Naturalist Program. \nThis event is a Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike. \nThe Twilight Hike version will include a hike after sunset to discuss and look for the creatures that are more active after the sun goes down. The group will explore a unique forest ecosystem from top to bottom in search of salamanders\, owls\, flying squirrels\, fireflies and any other creatures they might come across. The Twilight Hike program is not accessible to guests with limited mobility.
