Grandfather Mountain employees know to watch this heath bald on the south side of the Mountain in late September and early October as it is one of the first areas to change and show vivid color. The soil is thin in this area and bright colors emerge from sourwoods, sassafras and many shrubs. A great place to view this color is from the Mile High Swinging Bridge. (Photo by Monty Combs)
The Grandfather Mountain attraction and Grandfather Mountain State Park are not affected by the national government shutdown and remain open to visitors. While facilities along the Blue Ridge Parkway are closed, the road remains open and is already becoming a great place to see fall color, especially between Grandfather Mountain and Blowing Rock, NC.
