Shakespeare, a Barred Owl, arrived at Grandfather Mountain in April of 2006. Prior to that, he lived in the wild in the NC High Country. Like all owls, Shakespeare hunted next to roadsides preying on small mammals eating trash or food thrown from passing cars. He was struck by one of these cars and was sent to rehabilitation at Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC before being sent here. He suffers from wing damage and cannot be released back into the wild.
Shakespeare is trained to perch on a glove and assists our Naturalists in educational programs offered to schools and guests here at Grandfather Mountain. He is considered an ambassador animal, which means that he is used to teach people about Barred Owls, their importance to the ecosystem, conservation and to debunk many myths that surround these nocturnal creatures. We often bring him out throughout the year to educate guests to the park. He is also one of the few animals here at Grandfather that gets to travel to schools and special events for programs off the mountain.
