Luna came to live on Grandfather Mountain in November 2010, when she was eight months old. She was discovered at the young age of five weeks old in a private backyard near Lincoln County, N.C. No one knows what happened to her mother or why she came to be there all alone. She was taken to a licensed rehabber in Lincolnton, N.C. Her eyes were just beginning to open when her adopted mother first took her in. The next seven months were spent learning how to swim, dry off and eat solid foods. A couple of months after coming to live at Grandfather, which was a huge change from her life in Lincolnton, Luna was introduced to Nottaway, Oconee and Santee. This would be the first time Luna had ever seen another otter. She would soon become fast friends with Nottaway, the sweet, easygoing guy of the bunch.
Luna is very curious, full of energy and loves to play! Her favorite thing to do is go swimming, whether in her pond or her water bowl. Her second favorite thing to do is drag anything and everything into her pond to play with her, while she is swimming. To Luna, everything is a toy — from a pine branch taken from her bed to a stick lying on the ground to her food bowl. She also loves spending time with her friend, Nottaway, and can often be seen nuzzling him for attention.
