Herbie is a red phase Eastern Screech Owl. He arrived at Grandfather Mountain in September of 2005 after a period of rehabilitation due to being hit by a car. Owls will hunt next to roadsides preying on small mammals that are eating trash or food thrown from passing cars. He was rehabilitated at Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. Even though he can still fly, the damage he sustained to his wings and eyes in the accident makes it impossible for him catch enough food to survive in the wild, and therefore he will spend the rest of his life in captivity teaching others about owls and conservation.
Herbie is trained to perch on a glove and assists our Naturalists in educational programs offered to schools and guests here at Grandfather Mountain. He is considered an ambassador animal, simply meaning that he is used to teach people about Eastern Screech Owls, their importance to the ecosystem, conservation and to debunk myths that surround these nocturnal creatures. He is one of the few animals here at Grandfather that gets to travel to schools and special events for programs off the mountain. We frequently bring him out for educational experiences during the year at Grandfather.
