Aspen was born at Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park in Pagosa Springs, CO, on June 22, 2003. Grandfather Mountain adopted Aspen when he was about three months old. Some of the habitat staff flew to Colorado on a twin engine airplane to pick up him up in person. Aspen was about the size of a house cat when he arrived, but he grew very quickly! He was and still is extremely playful and loving. He liked to suck on soft sweaters and blankets when he was young and put holes in several of the keepers’ clothing as a result.
Aspen was hand-raised until he was about one and a half years old. At that point he was big enough to move into the cougar habitat with the two adult females, Sheaba and Nikita. All three of the cougars got along great! They loved to play, wrestle and groom each other. Sadly, over the years Sheaba and Nikita have passed away, leaving Aspen on his own for the time being. Aspen loves to stalk things, chase small animals and catch fish in his pond. Aspen also loves to bat balls around his habitat and is always enthusiastic about enrichments.
