Grandfather Mountain visitors bundled up outside as the month of November brought cool winter temperatures and  gusty wind to the Mountain.

The automatic weather station at the top of Grandfather Mountain recorded the average high temperature for the month as 43.0 degrees and the average low temperature as 25.7 degrees.  These numbers read a few degrees lower than the State Climate Office data from Mt. Mitchell State Park.  The average high temperature at Mt. Mitchell was 43.5 degrees and the average low temperature was 26.1 degrees.

Wind gusts over 60 mph were recorded eleven times.  The highest three-second gust during the month was 79.64 mph recorded November 18.

The rainfall total of 3.44 inches of rain recorded at the top of the Mountain was only .84 inches, or 20 percent, below the 58-year average rainfall total for October of 4.28 inches.

Entrance Gate employees recorded 4.63 inches of rain and melted snow for the month and the naturalist staff recorded 4.99 inches at the weather equipment near the Fudge Shop.  One inch of snow was also recorded at the Entrance Gate November 26.

Rainfall for the year continues to be up.  Rain for the year-to-date is 80.52 inches, which is 21.37 inches (or 36 percent) above the norm for this time of the year.
