The leaves of the Indian Cucumber Root, seen in this Skip Sickler photo, turn a deep red near the stem in autumn.  The plant, seen along the Profile Trail in Grandfather Mountain State Park, grows in open woods and forests across the region.

Fall color can be found at elevations between 2,000 – 4,500 feet this weekend.  Drives to the NC High Country from Marion, Morganton, Hickory and Wilkesboro should be particularly nice.
