You’ll discover some of the park’s nighttime wonders\, watch a stunning sunset (weather permitting) and experience the mountain as never before! \nThe evening starts atop Grandfather Mountain at the Mile High Swinging Bridge\, where participants can explore and observe sunset from this lofty vantage point. During this time\, park educators will be on hand to discuss the unique flora and crepuscular (active during twilight) fauna that call Grandfather home. \nIn-park transportation is provided. Each Grandfather by Night event is limited to 24 participants. Advance registration is required. Please note: This event is for individuals eight years of age and older. \nWe are offering two versions of our Grandfather by Night series this year\, Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike and Grandfather by Night: Naturalist Program. \nThis event is a Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike. \nThe Twilight Hike version will include a hike after sunset to discuss and look for the creatures that are more active after the sun goes down. The group will explore a unique forest ecosystem from top to bottom in search of salamanders\, owls\, flying squirrels\, fireflies and any other creatures they might come across. The Twilight Hike program is not accessible to guests with limited mobility. Participants signed up for this version will need to participate in the hike\, as staying behind while the rest of the group hikes is not possible. \nThe event starts for registered participants at 8 p.m. In-park transportation will be provided. \nLearn more about this event series\, the two versions of programming and all Grandfather by Night dates. \nThis event costs $50 for general admission and $42 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club – plus tax. SUMMARY:Educator Workshop: Project Learning Tree
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This Educator Workshop is intended specifically for educators — not the general public. \nJoin Grandfather Mountain’s Interpretation and Education staff and Matt Robinson from the Town of Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. This workshop is geared toward K-5th educators\, though all educators\, formal and nonformal\, are welcome. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide that includes 50 hands-on\, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. The activities in this resource are supported by a robust Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) correlation guide\, building durable STEM Skills\, and differentiated instruction. \nThis workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program. CEU renewal credits are available. \nThe PLT activity guides are provided free of charge to participants through support from the N.C. Forestry Association. If the cost of this workshop is a barrier for you\, or if you have any other questions\, please reach out to the N.C. PLT Coordinator\, Renee Strnad at renee_strnad@ncsu.edu. \nTickets\nRegistration is $20. Limited to 25 participants. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is now closed. \nThis popular shutterbug weekend includes presentations from top nature photographers\, hands-on field courses\, a friendly contest and the rare opportunity to photograph the mountain’s spectacular scenery before and after regular business hours. \nThis popular weekend welcomes all levels of photographers\, making it fun and engaging no matter what your skill level is – while better connecting participants with the wonders and unique ecology of Grandfather Mountain. This year\, more than ever\, we hope to not only help participants learn about photography\, but to also inspire them to preserve the natural world. Activities begin Friday evening and conclude Sunday midday. \n2026 Speakers: Jennifer King\, John Mauser\, Jane Palmer and Tony Sweet  \n2026 Speaker Biographies | Speaker Presentations | 2026 Event Schedule | 2026 Field Courses \nEvent Ticket Costs\nParticipant Pass (includes contest) – Pass includes three-day admission to the park\, entry into the weekend’s contest\, the opportunity to camp at Woods Walk\, the Friday social\, the Saturday dinner\, speaker presentations and sunrise/sunset access: $175/person. Other than some grills and fresh mountain air\, there are no other amenities. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This Educator Workshop is intended specifically for educators — not the general public. \nThe focus of this 10-hour workshop is to prepare participants from a variety of educational backgrounds and experiences in both the formal and non-formal sectors to use exemplary Environmental Education teaching methods. Participants will learn about a variety of teaching techniques\, methods and instructional strategies; and the workshop will include multiple interactive components. This is a required workshop for all NC Environmental Education Certification candidates. This workshop may also count for Continuing Education for those educators who are already certified. \nJune 12: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (onsite at GMSF)\nJune 13: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (onsite at GMSF) \nThis workshop is free to attend\, although advance registration is required. Arthur\, Sybbie\, and their mum and dad\, John and Christina\, create wholesome and visually appealing posts and reels that aim to educate\, inspire and encourage kids of all ages to safely experience the outdoors and develop a deep love and connection with nature. Their content covers a broad range of topics\, from wild food identification and safety\, cooking and recipes\, wildlife\, nature-inspired lifestyle activities\, and ecological and environmental issues. Christina is a Clinical Psychologist and John is an educator\, professional photographer\, foraging enthusiast and author of “The Grizzly Forager’s Guide to Family Foraging.” \nMeet Arthur \n \nArthur is a quiet\, thoughtful\, and caring young boy with a curious nature. He has always been outside from a very early age\, taking naps outside in his pram in all weathers as a baby – even snow! Arthur has a very deep love of nature and wildlife\, particularly ocean creatures and reptiles\, which stems from his keen interest in dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. He cares deeply about our impact on the environment and how we responsibly source our food. Arthur has a clear thirst for knowledge and uses the forest and our foraging exploits not only to have fun\, but to absorb information and learn new things\, which brings him joy and happiness. \nMeet Sybbie \n \nSybil (or Sybbie for short\, even though that’s longer!) was born at home during the first Covid-19 lockdown of 2020. She was a little earlier than expected\, and surprised us all by arriving\, of all places\, in the shower! Sybbie is outgoing\, confident\, cheeky and creative and enjoys singing\, dancing and theatrics. Like her brother\, she has a deep love of animals and wildlife\, particularly insects\, but also has a very strong maternal instinct\, finding beauty\, love and compassion for small things\, from spiders and birds to flowers and mushrooms. She describes herself as a ‘Foraging Princess’; but can just as easily transform\, when the mood takes her\, into a fierce ‘Warrior Princess’\, swapping out dresses\, hair clips and sparkly shoes for swords\, feathers and moccasin boots. In the forest\, rather than being driven by a thirst for knowledge like her brother\, she instead enjoys the thrill of the chase\, the sense of adventure\, and the pure joy of seeing and experiencing new things. \nJoin the whole Grizzly Clan for a fireside chat all about foraging\, parenting\, wellbeing and living the slow life in wild and rugged Northumberland back home. SUMMARY:Family Field Course: Grizzly Family Foraging
DESCRIPTION:Embark on a wild adventure with The Grizzly Forager on the mountain in search of mysterious treasure made by wasps\, which explorers of old gathered and made into ink – the same ink that was used to sign the Declaration of Independence! Arthur\, Sybbie and their dad\, John\, will guide you through the process of how to forage for oak galls and turn them into usable ink. \nOak Gall ink was the standard European writing and drawing ink from the 5th to the 19th century\, used for vital documents like the Magna Carta\, Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings\, Bach’s manuscripts and you guessed it\, The Declaration of Independence! It is made by mixing tannin-rich oak galls (wasp larvae nurseries) with other ingredients\, creating a permanent\, waterproof\, deep black pigment. You will head out on a forage to find them (and possibly some other fab wild foods along the way)\, before bringing them back to camp\, starting a fire and making the ink as a group! \nThe Grizzly Forager is an aspirational social media account with the primary aim of inspiring parents to get outside with their kids via the art of foraging. Arthur\, Sybbie\, and their mum and dad\, John and Christina\, create wholesome and visually appealing posts and reels that aim to educate\, inspire and encourage kids of all ages to safely experience the outdoors and develop a deep love and connection with nature. Their content covers a broad range of topics\, from wild food identification and safety\, cooking and recipes\, wildlife\, nature-inspired lifestyle activities\, and ecological and environmental issues. Christina is a Clinical Psychologist and John is an educator\, professional photographer\, foraging enthusiast and author of The Grizzly Forager’s Guide to Family Foraging. \nProgram Itinerary\n10 a.m. – Meet at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery and Introductions\n10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Foraging with Arthur and Sybbie\n12 – 12:30 p.m. – Lunch at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery\n12:30 – 2:30 p.m. – Make oak gall dyes at the Outdoor Learning Space\n2:30 – 3 p.m. – Wrap up and evaluations \nTickets\nThis event costs $35 for adults and $29 for adults who are members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club – plus tax. DESCRIPTION:On Animal Enrichment Day\, guests see firsthand how Grandfather Mountain cares for its resident animals. An enrichment is a special treat\, new toy or even an unfamiliar scent given to the animals to break up their routines and help keep them active and intellectually stimulated. Watch enrichment demonstrations\, talk directly with keepers and participate in family-oriented games and crafts. Included with admission. Activities kick off at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery and adjacent Wildlife Habitats. \nAnimal Enrichment Day Schedule:\n11 – 11:30 a.m. | Behind-the-Scenes Bear Training Tour (optional\, additional cost) – Come watch a bear training with one of the habitat keepers. Training involves teaching the bears behaviors to help with their care and is another form of enrichment for them. This tour costs $20 per person\, or $18 for Bridge Club members. There is a minimum of two people per group and a maximum of 12 people. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This Educator Workshop is intended specifically for educators — not the general public. \nThis workshop is open to individuals studying for the NC Environmental Education Certification or those needing CE Credits to maintain their certification and will focus on bears in North Carolina. \nHosted by Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation’s own Interpretation and Education staff\, this workshop will teach participants about the life history and management of black bears\, as well as how to incorporate activities about bears into the N.C. Curriculum. Participants will also get to meet the black bears who call Grandfather Mountain home and what it takes to keep them healthy and happy. \nN.C. EE Certification Credit: Criteria II or III and CEU credit are available upon completion of workshop. \nTickets\nThis workshop is free to attend\, although advance registration is required. You’ll discover some of the park’s nighttime wonders\, watch a stunning sunset (weather permitting) and experience the mountain as never before! \nThe evening starts atop Grandfather Mountain at the Mile High Swinging Bridge\, where participants can explore and observe sunset from this lofty vantage point. During this time\, park educators will be on hand to discuss the unique flora and crepuscular (active during twilight) fauna that call Grandfather home. \nIn-park transportation is provided. Each Grandfather by Night event is limited to 24 participants. Advance registration is required. Please note: This event is for individuals eight years of age and older. \nWe are offering two versions of our Grandfather by Night series this year\, Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike and Grandfather by Night: Naturalist Program. \nThis event is a Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike. \nThe Twilight Hike version will include a hike after sunset to discuss and look for the creatures that are more active after the sun goes down. The group will explore a unique forest ecosystem from top to bottom in search of salamanders\, owls\, flying squirrels\, fireflies and any other creatures they might come across. The Twilight Hike program is not accessible to guests with limited mobility. SUMMARY:Sunrise at the Swinging Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, Grandfather Mountain\, the not-for-profit nature park run by the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation\, is offering a sunrise experience in 2026. This special event\, titled “Sunrise at the Swinging Bridge\,” will provide guests with the rare opportunity to be in the park outside of regular operating hours and to hopefully experience a lovely sunrise from the bridge’s lofty vantage point. \nTickets for this event go on sale online on Grandfather Mountain’s website June 2 at 10 a.m. \nBridge Club Members\, click here to purchase tickets.\nYou will need to use your Bridge Club member number (located on your card below the barcode) to purchase. \nNon-Bridge Club Members\, click here to purchase tickets. \nAdmission to this event is $52 for general admission\, $33 for children (ages 3-12) and $20 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club. Event tickets include an entire day’s access to Grandfather. As the remainder of the park doesn’t open until later on after sunrise (8 a.m. on Aug. 1)\, participants are welcome to leave the mountain following sunrise and return later in the day for no additional cost. \nDue to safety regulations\, eventgoers are only permitted to view the sunrise from the Swinging Bridge area. The Top Shop gift shop and restrooms will be accessible during the events. Park educators will be on hand to talk to guests about the nature around the Swinging Bridge\, identify nearby points of interest and answer any questions. In addition\, a professional photographer very familiar with capturing sunrises at Grandfather Mountain will also be on hand to chat with those guests wishing to capture the beauty of the day’s first light with their cameras. \nParticipants are strongly encouraged to bring a flashlight or headlamp and wear heavy jackets\, hats\, gloves and rubber-soled shoes. Spring and summer mornings can still be surprisingly very chilly at the top of Grandfather Mountain! \nThis event may be canceled on short notice in case of inclement weather\, and guests will be refunded if that’s the case. In addition\, a picture-perfect sunrise\, unfortunately\, cannot be guaranteed. \nThis event is limited to 150 guests. If the events sell out\, waiting lists will be available. \n-Tickets for this event go on sale online on Grandfather Mountain’s website June 2 at 10 a.m.\n-Park gates will open to sunrise participants at 5:30 a.m.\n-Sunrise is at 6:35 a.m. on Aug. 1\n-Park hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. this day\, with trails closing at 6 p.m.\n-To receive a full refund\, guests must cancel prior to 5 p.m. Friday\, March 6. SUMMARY:Adult Field Course: Exploring Natural Communities of Grandfather Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-depth exploration of the natural community types found on Grandfather Mountain. In this class\, you’ll learn to recognize distinct habitats by studying their characteristic flora\, fauna and environmental conditions. Guided by ecological principles and scientific tools\, we’ll examine how factors such as elevation\, topography\, soil composition and microclimates shape these unique ecosystems and provide habitats for some of the rare and endangered species that we’ll see during our exploration. This workshop will enhance your ability to classify habitats and deepen your understanding of the complex interplay between species and their environments. \nElizabeth Trott and Leigh Ann Emery have served as Interpretive Park Guides for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation since 2021 and 2022\, respectively. Both are NAI Certified Interpretive Park Guides\, and both are nearing completion of the North Carolina Environmental Educator certification. Elizabeth and Leigh Ann both have an immense passion for all aspects of nature. Here’s a chance to learn about the lifestyle and habitats of fungi\, as well as observe many kinds of fungal fruiting bodies\, including mushrooms growing at higher elevations. Participants will learn how to identify them by size\, shape and color. You will also inoculate a log with shiitake mushroom mycelium to take home with you. After an interactive introduction to the fungi kingdom\, that includes inoculating the logs\, we’ll take a short slow stroll in search of mushrooms growing on the mountain to collect representatives of different fungal families to study back in the classroom. Through this workshop and field exploration\, you’ll learn about fungal habitats\, toxicology and the important roles fungi play in the forest ecosystem. The workshop is designed for beginners\, but veteran foragers will also glean new insights. \nJulie Mullis has been smitten with all aspects of fungi for the past 25 years\, starting when she keyed out an interesting-looking mushroom during a slow\, rainy park ranger season. She has taught many fungi programs and workshops for the community and for the parks where she has worked. She is currently in her 14th season as an interpretive ranger on the Blue Ridge Parkway\, currently working north of Boone at Brinegar Cabin in Doughton Park. She has also enjoyed seasons as an environmental educator in Tongass National Forest in Alaska\, W. During this time\, park educators will be on hand to discuss the unique flora and crepuscular (active during twilight) fauna that call Grandfather home. \nIn-park transportation is provided. Each Grandfather by Night event is limited to 24 participants. Advance registration is required. Please note: This event is for individuals eight years of age and older. \nWe are offering two versions of our Grandfather by Night series this year\, Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike and Grandfather by Night: Naturalist Program. \nThis event is a Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike. \nThe Twilight Hike version will include a hike after sunset to discuss and look for the creatures that are more active after the sun goes down. SUMMARY:Adult Field Course: Appalachian Woodcraft
DESCRIPTION:The hardy settlers who made these mountains home were resourceful and made what they needed from what was at hand\, and what was at hand was wood. We will examine the types of things Appalachian people have made for themselves from the forests around them like chairs\, bowls\, spoons\, tool handles and more. We will also observe the tools they used to make these items. After taking a walk through the forest which was the pioneer’s lumber yard\, where we will identify trees and some of their uses\, we will focus on a hands-on project – each participant will make an example of that ubiquitous piece of pioneer woodcraft\, the hook. Made from a small\, forked tree branch\, often of rhododendron\, these hooks were found in homes\, barns and outbuildings to hang cloths\, tools\, horse harness and more on the wall in an organized fashion. \nJason Lonon is a craftsman and teacher living and working in the same valley his ancestors have called home since the 1840s. Concurrent to serving an apprenticeship in traditional woodworking\, Jason began blacksmithing as a teenager in the late 1990’s. Today\, Jason and a team of highly skilled craftsmen produce a line of specialty carving tools for traditional woodworkers. SUMMARY:Grandfather Presents: Buddy Huffaker and Stan Temple
DESCRIPTION:Buddy Huffaker joined the Aldo Leopold Foundation in 1996 as a seasonal intern and has served as Executive Director since 1999.  During his tenure\, the foundation has grown into a national conservation organization with international reach\, realizing the potential of a Land Ethic. \nThrough educational and on-the-ground initiatives\, Buddy’s leadership of the foundation furthers the Leopold family’s enduring legacy—a commitment to care for nature and inspire others to do the same. Buddy led the construction of the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center\, a testament to energy efficiency and sense of place. The building is certified LEED Platinum and constructed from trees planted by Aldo Leopold and his family. \nHe leads the preservation of the Leopold Shack & Farm\, a National Historic Landmark and setting of Leopold’s masterpiece\, “A Sand County Almanac\,” as well as land care of the surrounding 4\,000-acre Leopold-Pines Conservation Area. He produced the Emmy Award-winning documentary “Green Fire” and supported ten different foreign translations of Leopold’s famous book. Buddy’s leadership in the conservation movement includes service on state and federal advisory committees and participation in three White House Conferences on conservation and environmental education. \nDr. Stanley A. Temple is the Beers-Bascom Professor Emeritus in Conservation in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For 32 years he held the academic position once occupied by Aldo Leopold\, and during that time he won every teaching award for which he was eligible. He and his students have helped save many of the world’s endangered species and the habitats on which they depend. \nHe is currently a Senior Fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation\, where he leads crane tours and introduces Future Leaders Fellows to Leopold’s history\, phenology\, and wildlife ecology. He has also been a core contributor to the yearly Wisconsin Phenology Calendar. He has received conservation awards from the Society for Conservation Biology\, The Wildlife Society\, and Wisconsin Society for Ornithology. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithologists’ Union\, American Association for the Advancement of Science\, and Wisconsin Academy of Sciences\, Arts and Letters. He has been President of the Society for Conservation Biology and Chairman of the Board of The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame in 2020. \nThe Aug. 20 presentation is titled “Aldo Leopold’s Legacy: A conversation on land ethic and conservation.” Join a fireside chat with Huffaker\, Temple (joining virtually) and Jesse Pope\, president and CEO of Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation on endangered species and the land ethic. Temple will share stories from his lifetime of work on conservation efforts to save endangered species across the world\, including one right here at Grandfather Mountain. Huffaker and Pope will chat about Leopold’s Land Ethic today\, why it continues to be important and what challenges are being faced at Grandfather. \nConsidered by many to be the father of wildlife ecology and modern conservation\, Aldo Leopold was a forester\, philosopher\, conservationist\, educator\, writer and outdoor enthusiast. Among Aldo Leopold’s best-known ideas is the “land ethic\,” which calls for an ethical\, caring relationship between people and nature. You’ll discover some of the park’s nighttime wonders\, watch a stunning sunset (weather permitting) and experience the mountain as never before! \nThe evening starts atop Grandfather Mountain at the Mile High Swinging Bridge\, where participants can explore and observe sunset from this lofty vantage point. During this time\, park educators will be on hand to discuss the unique flora and crepuscular (active during twilight) fauna that call Grandfather home. \nIn-park transportation is provided. Each Grandfather by Night event is limited to 24 participants. Advance registration is required. Please note: This event is for individuals eight years of age and older. \nWe are offering two versions of our Grandfather by Night series this year\, Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike and Grandfather by Night: Naturalist Program. \nThis event is a Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike. \nThe Twilight Hike version will include a hike after sunset to discuss and look for the creatures that are more active after the sun goes down. The group will explore a unique forest ecosystem from top to bottom in search of salamanders\, owls\, flying squirrels\, fireflies and any other creatures they might come across. The Twilight Hike program is not accessible to guests with limited mobility. Participants signed up for this version will need to participate in the hike\, as staying behind while the rest of the group hikes is not possible. \nThe event starts for registered participants at 7:30 p.m. In-park transportation will be provided. \nLearn more about this event series\, the two versions of programming and all Grandfather by Night dates. \nThis event costs $50 for general admission and $42 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club – plus tax. Through a series of invitations\, you will have the opportunity to focus on being present in the moment\, deepening your connection with nature and community and enjoying the many gifts nature has to offer. \n \n“Forest Bathing” is a walk in nature during which your guide will share mindfulness practices and invitations designed to connect you more deeply to your inner landscapes as well as the world around you. Inspired by shinrin-yoku (forest-bath) the Japanese art of immersing oneself in a forest environment\, forest bathing walks invite guests to spend time in nature in a way that invites healing for us\, as well as our fraught ecosystems\, and our community. \nProgram Itinerary\n10 a.m. – Meet at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery. We begin with an introduction to Forest Bathing\, the watershed and history of the ancestral lands of the walk.\n10:30 – 12 p.m. – We will experience the forest and trails on the mountain\, with a variety of “invitations” to explore our relationship with the forest and “more than human world” of nature.\n12 p.m. – Lunch\n12:30 p.m. – Return to Wilson Center\n1 p.m. – We will end with a tea ceremony with tea made from plants of Grandfather Mountain. \nTickets\nThis event costs $40 for general admission and $34 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club – plus tax. However\, donations to the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation are accepted if you would like to recognize a program. \nGeneral Clothing List\nMuch of your time will be spent outdoors and all programs are held rain or shine.
