SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Well-being Series: Nature and Forest Therapy at Grandfather Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Join Mattie Decker\, a certified forest therapy guide for a relaxing 2 to 2.5-hour stroll through the forest at Grandfather Mountain. Through a series of invitations\, you will have an opportunity to focus on being present in the moment\, deepening your connection with nature and community and enjoying the many gifts nature has to offer. \n“Forest bathing” is a walk in nature during which your guide will share mindfulness practices and invitations designed to connect you more deeply to your inner landscapes as well as the world around you. Inspired by shinrin-yoku\, (literally ‘forest bath’) the Japanese art of immersing oneself in a forest environment\, forest bathing walks invite guests to spend time in nature in a way that invites healing for us\, as well as our fraught ecosystems\, and our community. \nDr. Mattie Decker\, a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT). Mattie is also a mindfulness teacher\, a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate and a retired professor of education. She is also certified in wilderness medicine and first aid. Mattie says\, “The forest is the therapist. The guide opens the doors.” As a guide she assists us in opening the doors of the senses\, to deepen our relationship with nature\, which is our own true nature. \n \nProgram Itinerary\n10:00 a.m. – Meet at the Woods Walk Picnic Area. We begin with an Introduction to Forest Bathing\, the watershed and history of the ancestral lands of the walk.\n10:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – We will experience the forest and trails along the loop\, with a variety of “invitations” to explore our relationship with the forest and “more than human world” of nature\, and we will end with a tea ceremony with tea made from plants of Grandfather Mountain. \nTickets\nThis event costs $40 for general admission and $34 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club – plus tax. SUMMARY:SOLO Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Course
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will take place at Grandfather Mountain and be hosted by Nantahala Outdoor Center’s SOLO Southeast Wilderness Medicine and Survival School. Instruction both days is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nRegistration is currently up and running and is being hosted online by SOLO Southeast. Register here. (Look for the Grandfather Mountain event taking place Aug. 23-24.) The cost is $285. \nAll participants must be 14 years or older. Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nAbout the course\nThis 2-day entry-level course is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts looking for introductory first aid training and backcountry medical skills. There are no prerequisites for this class. Holders of a current Advanced Wilderness First Aid (AWFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification from SOLO may use this course for recertification. \nWilderness First Aid (WFA) covers topics ranging from preparation and prevention to assessment and treatment. SUMMARY:Educator Workshop: WILD About Salamanders
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This Educator Workshop is intended specifically for educators — not the general public. \nThis workshop is open to individuals studying for the NC Environmental Education Certification or those needing CE Credits to maintain their certification and will focus on salamanders in North Carolina. \nHosted by Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation’s own Education and Interpretation staff\, Michelle Malalang and Cooper Barnwell\, this workshop will focus on the various types of salamanders in North Carolina\, specifically those found in Western North Carolina. We will cover life cycles\, habitats\, identification\, anatomy and much more\, and hopefully spend time outdoors looking for salamanders. Participants will also test out activities they can take back to their classrooms. \nThe program is open to all interested educators. All participants qualify for CEU and EE Criteria II or III credits. \nThis workshop is free to attend\, although advance registration is required. Limited to 25 participants. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a compelling panel discussion that explores nature’s resilience after Hurricane Helene\, with powerful findings and updates one year later. The event will open with meteorologist Brad Panovich setting the stage of the storm’s path and record-breaking impacts on our region. From there\, a panel discussion with Panovich\, wildlife biologist Marquette Crockett and geologist Philip Prince will provide insights into key questions such as how the natural world changed because of Helene\, what we’ve learned from the storm and what findings may still be to come. The panelists will share their expertise and research from their fields of study and reflect on how extreme weather continues to shape our environment. Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation President and CEO Jesse Pope will moderate the discussion. \nFollowing the talk in the Wilson Center’s Classroom in the Clouds\, eventgoers will experience some social time with heavy hors d’oeuvres catered by Stonewalls and the opportunity to mingle with other attendees and the panelists. A nature-inspired concert by traveling composer/performer Ben Cosgrove will then take place at the Williams Outdoor Learning Space. (The Classroom in the Clouds will be the rain location for the concert.) \nBen Cosgrove explores themes of landscape\, place and environment with his music. Described by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter … [using] his piano as a paintbrush\,” Cosgrove has performed in every U.S. state except for Delaware\, collaborated with groups ranging from rock bands to research scientists\, contributed music to several radio and film projects (including the recent Ken Burns documentary “The American Buffalo”) and held residencies and fellowships with institutions including NASA\, the National Park Service\, the National Forest Service\, Harvard University\, Middlebury College\, the Schmidt Ocean Institute and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology. \nDuring the event\, Cosgrove will debut a song inspired by time spent at Grandfather Mountain. \nPanelists:\nBrad Panovich has been working for WCNC-TV in Charlotte since 2003. He is the chief meteorologist and previously spoke at a Grandfather Presents in 2023. \nHe has a passion for weather and science education. Panovich holds a bachelor’s degree in meteorology from The Ohio State University. He is a certified broadcast meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society and a member of the National Weather Association. He has won several awards for his work\, including two Emmys and “The American Meteorological Society Broadcast Meteorologist of the Year” in 2017. He is also an adjunct professor within the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s meteorology program. \nPanovich is not only a meteorologist\, but also a social media influencer. He has over 600\,000 followers on Facebook\, Twitter\, Instagram and YouTube\, where he posts daily weather updates\, videos\, live streams and interactive Q&A sessions. He is known for his engaging and informative style\, as well as his use of humor and emojis. He is also an advocate for environmental issues around climate change and renewable energy. \nMarquette Crockett is the Highlands of Roan stewardship director for Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC). She received a BS in Biology from Lincoln Memorial University and an MS in Biological Sciences from East Tennessee State University\, where she studied salamander communities in East Tennessee. \nShe has over 15 years of wildlife management and planning experience in the mountains\, including working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a refuge biologist at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in West Virginia. \nCrockett joined SAHC staff in 2014\, where she leads stewardship work on almost 12\,000 acres of SAHC preserves in the Highlands of Roan. She coordinates multi-agency and volunteer efforts to restore and protect the globally rare grassy bald habitats found on Roan Mountain and currently serves as co-chair of the Southern Appalachian Spruce Restoration Initiative. \nCrockett received the North Carolina Wildlife Federations Governor’s Conservation Achievement Award for “Public Lands Conservationist” in May 2025. \nPhilip Prince\, a native of Greenville\, S.C.\, graduated from Furman University in 2004. After two years of work in environmental consulting\, he began a PhD at Virginia Tech in 2006\, finishing his doctoral studies on Appalachian landscape evolution in 2011. \nAfter teaching at Virginia Tech until 2016 and spending two years with the Virginia Geological Survey in Charlottesville\, Prince returned to upstate South Carolina in late 2019 to begin work in landslide mapping with Appalachian Landslide Consultants out of Asheville. \nHe is active in both applied and research-focused work in the southern Appalachians\, splitting time today between landslide studies and geologic mapping in southwest Virginia. SUMMARY:Sunrise at the Swinging Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, Grandfather Mountain\, the not-for-profit nature park run by the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation\, is offering a sunrise experience in 2026. This special event\, titled “Sunrise at the Swinging Bridge\,” will provide guests with the rare opportunity to be in the park outside of regular operating hours and to hopefully experience a lovely sunrise from the bridge’s lofty vantage point. \nThe elevator in the Top Shop will unfortunately not be operational for the March 14 sunrise event due to a mechanical issue. The Swinging Bridge area will only be accessible via stairs (either the set outside of the set in the Top Shop). An option for folks wanting to attend the event but not able to use the stairs would be to watch the sunrise from the east-facing side of the Top Shop parking lot. This vantage point also provides a nice view! We will make sure to have staff roving to this area as well. We apologize for the inconvenience.  \nTickets for this event go on sale online on Grandfather Mountain’s website Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. \nBridge Club Members\, click here to purchase tickets.\nYou will need to use your Bridge Club member number (located on your card below the barcode) to purchase. \nNon-Bridge Club Members\, click here to purchase tickets. \nAdmission to this event is $52 for general admission\, $33 for children (ages 3-12) and $20 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club. As the remainder of the park doesn’t open until later on after sunrise (9 a.m. on March 14)\, participants are welcome to leave the mountain following sunrise and return later in the day for no additional cost. \nDue to safety regulations\, eventgoers are only permitted to view the sunrise from the Swinging Bridge area. The Top Shop gift shop and restrooms will be accessible during the events. Park educators will be on hand to talk to guests about the nature around the Swinging Bridge\, identify nearby points of interest and answer any questions. In addition\, a professional photographer very familiar with capturing sunrises at Grandfather Mountain will also be on hand to chat with those guests wishing to capture the beauty of the day’s first light with their cameras. \nParticipants are strongly encouraged to bring a flashlight or headlamp and wear heavy jackets\, hats\, gloves and rubber-soled shoes. Spring and summer mornings can still be surprisingly very chilly at the top of Grandfather Mountain! \nThis event may be canceled on short notice in case of inclement weather\, and guests will be refunded if that’s the case. In addition\, a picture-perfect sunrise\, unfortunately\, cannot be guaranteed. \nThis event is limited to 150 guests. Originally from Charlotte\, N.C.\, Leigh Ann graduated from Lees-McRae College with a degree in Wildlife Biology in 2019. She is an NAI Certified Interpretive Guide and a Certified North Carolina Environmental Educator. Leigh Ann has an immense passion for all aspects of nature\, often spending her time exploring Grandfather Mountain and sharing that passion with anyone who will listen. \nWill Bennett graduated from Appalachian State University with a Masters in Geography in 2024 and surveyed the Town of Boone property for invasive plants to create an invasives management plan for the town. You’ll discover some of the park’s nighttime wonders\, watch a stunning sunset (weather permitting) and experience the mountain as never before! \nThe evening starts atop Grandfather Mountain at the Mile High Swinging Bridge\, where participants can explore and observe sunset from this lofty vantage point. During this time\, park educators will be on hand to discuss the unique flora and crepuscular (active during twilight) fauna that call Grandfather home. \nIn-park transportation is provided. Each Grandfather by Night event is limited to 24 participants. Advance registration is required. Please note: This event is for individuals eight years of age and older. \nWe are offering two versions of our Grandfather by Night series this year\, Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike and Grandfather by Night: Naturalist Program. \nThis event is a Grandfather by Night: Twilight Hike. \nThe Twilight Hike version will include a hike after sunset to discuss and look for the creatures that are more active after the sun goes down. The group will explore a unique forest ecosystem from top to bottom in search of salamanders\, owls\, flying squirrels\, fireflies and any other creatures they might come across. The Twilight Hike program is not accessible to guests with limited mobility. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This Educator Workshop is intended specifically for educators — not the general public. \nJoin Grandfather Mountain’s Interpretation and Education staff and Matt Robinson from the Town of Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. This workshop is geared toward K-5th educators\, though all educators\, formal and nonformal\, are welcome. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide that includes 50 hands-on\, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. The activities in this resource are supported by a robust Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) correlation guide\, building durable STEM Skills\, and differentiated instruction. \nThis workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program. CEU renewal credits are available. \nThe PLT activity guides are provided free of charge to participants through support from the N.C. Forestry Association. If the cost of this workshop is a barrier for you\, or if you have any other questions\, please reach out to the N.C.
