A day designed to get kids excited about the nature and culture of the North Carolina Mountains through fun and entertaining activities. Guided hikes, games, storytellers, music and fun. All activities included with park admission.

Check-In Table (Nature Museum Lobby) Stop by our check-in table to pick up a Junior Ranger booklet, work on a craft or to learn more about the park!

Woods Walk Exploration (Woods Walk Picnic Area) This program is designed for children, but all are welcome to join. We will explore the Woods Walk Nature Trail in search of evidence of animal activity.

Face Painting (Nature Museum Lobby) Come join us to have your face painted!

Interpretive Table (Top Shop 2nd Floor) Stop by our interpretive table to learn about animals found on Grandfather Mountain.

Animal CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (Let It Rain Picnic Shelter) In their search for food, animals often leave behind clues that allow humans to gain a greater understanding of what animals are present and why they were there. This program is designed to allow participants to gain knowledge of animals found on Grandfather Mountain.

Instrument “Petting Zoo” (Butterfly Garden area) Ever wanted to try your hand at a banjo or dulcimer? Mark Freed from the Jones House Community Center in Boone will bring a range of instruments for a hands-on experience open to kids and adults of all ages. Learn more about the region’s stringed instruments and community programs where you can continue your musical journey.
1:00 – 2:00 Mountain Song and Story with Glenn Bolick (Nature Museum Auditorium) Meet Glenn, a locally renowned storyteller, potter, singer, musician and songwriter. He will be telling stories and presenting old-timey toys in the Nature Museum Auditorium. Come sit and listen to these Appalachian tales that have been passed down for generations.

Butterfly Program (Butterfly Garden) This is a very hands-on program where staff naturalists lead guests to the Butterfly Garden to catch different species of butterflies and identify them. Guests and staff will then take a look at these delicate creatures up-close and learn about their life cycle.

Bears Kids Program (Butterfly Garden) Learn more about this remarkable animal that makes its home on Grandfather Mountain.
