Through activities involving language arts, social science and math experiences, coupled with community outreach and service learning applications, Flying WILD offers a whole-school approach to environmental education using birds as the focus. Targeted for the middle-school audience, though widely adaptable, Flying WILD offers practical hands-on classroom and outdoor field investigation experiences connecting real-world experiences in bird biology, conservation and natural history. The workshop will be led by N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission educator Kevin Hining, and Grandfather Mountain staff naturalists will provide a bird walk. The workshop provides 6 hrs. Criteria I, II, or III credit towards the N.C. Environmental Education Certification, or 0.6 CEU credit. A homework option is available for those who wish to earn an additional 4 hrs. of credit, or 0.4 CEU credit. All participants receive a free Flying WILD workbook, containing more than 40 activities. For more information about Flying WILD, visit http://flyingwild.org/.

The program is free of charge and will take place in the Nature Museum sun room and in the field. Participants are asked to bring or buy their own lunch. For more information, or to register, email amy@grandfather.com, or call (828) 733-4326.
