SUMMARY:Grandfather Presents: Jeremy Wade
DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT\, and the waiting lists for “VIP Reception” and “Presentation” tickets are both full. \nAs a child in England\, Jeremy Wade was obsessed with fishing. However\, as he grew up\, the rivers seemed more crowded with fishermen and the catches less mythical\, and Wade’s dream faded. A chance discovery in his 20s of a magazine article about a fish in India\, the mahseer\, a giant golden-scaled carp that lives in thunderous rocky rivers\, rekindled his passion. He dusted down his fishing rods and set off with £200 in his pocket to follow his dreams. Decades later\, the rest\, as they say\, is history. \nWade was the presenter of the worldwide hit television series\, “River Monsters.” His book of the same name (Orion\, 2012) delivers a sometimes jaw-dropping blend of adventure\, natural history\, legend and detective work. It reads like a hunt for the Loch Ness Monster\, but it’s all true! His book “How to Think Like a Fish” (W&N\, 2019) teaches the reader how to improve their own fishing skills. Sparse on the details of technique\, it is about the simple\, fundamental principles – a mindset for success. It’s part science\, part art and part elusive something else. \n“We are excited to kick off this year’s Grandfather Presents speaker series with Jeremy Wade\,” said Landis Taylor\, vice president of marketing and communications for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation. “He’s\, of course\, known for his adventures to some of the most remote corners of the world to find some of the most unique species of fish\, and he’ll couple those stories with a call to action. Throughout his lifetime\, he’s witnessed the changes happening to the planet’s water ecosystems and the importance of\, and connection between\, water quality and the health and well-being of humans.” \nWade’s program will be presented in the style of a “fireside chat” for a more casual feel\, with a moderator asking questions and directing the conversation. There will also be time for members of the audience to ask questions. \nThe moderator for this event will be Elizabeth Biser\, Secretary of the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality. As DEQ Secretary\, she oversees the state agency whose mission is to protect North Carolina’s environment and natural resources. The organization has offices from the mountains to the coast and administers regulatory and public assistance programs aimed at protecting the quality of North Carolina’s air\, water and land\, its coastal resources and marine fisheries\, and the public’s health. \nCopies of Wade’s books\, “River Monsters” and “How to Think Like a Fish\,” will be on sale at Grandfather Mountain’s Wilson Center gift shop prior to the event and on June 27 during Grandfather Presents\, as supplies last. A summer reading list for the speaker series is coming soon! \nGrandfather Presents Schedule \n\n8 a.m. for June\, July and August events\, 9 a.m. for September event | Grandfather Mountain opens for the day\, and “VIP Reception” ticket holders are allowed access to the park. SUMMARY:Grandfather Presents: Nature’s Song of Renewal: Ecological Resilience After Helene
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a compelling panel discussion that explores nature’s resilience after Hurricane Helene\, with powerful findings and updates one year later. The event will open with meteorologist Brad Panovich setting the stage of the storm’s path and record-breaking impacts on our region. From there\, a panel discussion with Panovich\, wildlife biologist Marquette Crockett and geologist Philip Prince will provide insights into key questions such as how the natural world changed because of Helene\, what we’ve learned from the storm and what findings may still be to come. The panelists will share their expertise and research from their fields of study and reflect on how extreme weather continues to shape our environment. Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation President and CEO Jesse Pope will moderate the discussion. \nFollowing the talk in the Wilson Center’s Classroom in the Clouds\, eventgoers will experience some social time with heavy hors d’oeuvres catered by Stonewalls and the opportunity to mingle with other attendees and the panelists. A nature-inspired concert by traveling composer/performer Ben Cosgrove will then take place at the Williams Outdoor Learning Space. (The Classroom in the Clouds will be the rain location for the concert.) \nBen Cosgrove explores themes of landscape\, place and environment with his music. Described by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter … [using] his piano as a paintbrush\,” Cosgrove has performed in every U.S. state except for Delaware\, collaborated with groups ranging from rock bands to research scientists\, contributed music to several radio and film projects (including the recent Ken Burns documentary “The American Buffalo”) and held residencies and fellowships with institutions including NASA\, the National Park Service\, the National Forest Service\, Harvard University\, Middlebury College\, the Schmidt Ocean Institute and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology. \nDuring the event\, Cosgrove will debut a song inspired by time spent at Grandfather Mountain. \nPanelists:\nBrad Panovich has been working for WCNC-TV in Charlotte since 2003. He is the chief meteorologist and previously spoke at a Grandfather Presents in 2023. \nHe has a passion for weather and science education. Panovich holds a bachelor’s degree in meteorology from The Ohio State University. He is a certified broadcast meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society and a member of the National Weather Association. He has won several awards for his work\, including two Emmys and “The American Meteorological Society Broadcast Meteorologist of the Year” in 2017. He is also an adjunct professor within the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s meteorology program. \nPanovich is not only a meteorologist\, but also a social media influencer. He has over 600\,000 followers on Facebook\, Twitter\, Instagram and YouTube\, where he posts daily weather updates\, videos\, live streams and interactive Q&A sessions. He is known for his engaging and informative style\, as well as his use of humor and emojis. He is also an advocate for environmental issues around climate change and renewable energy. \nMarquette Crockett is the Highlands of Roan stewardship director for Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC). She received a BS in Biology from Lincoln Memorial University and an MS in Biological Sciences from East Tennessee State University\, where she studied salamander communities in East Tennessee. \nShe has over 15 years of wildlife management and planning experience in the mountains\, including working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a refuge biologist at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in West Virginia. \nCrockett joined SAHC staff in 2014\, where she leads stewardship work on almost 12\,000 acres of SAHC preserves in the Highlands of Roan. She coordinates multi-agency and volunteer efforts to restore and protect the globally rare grassy bald habitats found on Roan Mountain and currently serves as co-chair of the Southern Appalachian Spruce Restoration Initiative. \nCrockett received the North Carolina Wildlife Federations Governor’s Conservation Achievement Award for “Public Lands Conservationist” in May 2025. \nPhilip Prince\, a native of Greenville\, S.C.\, graduated from Furman University in 2004. After two years of work in environmental consulting\, he began a PhD at Virginia Tech in 2006\, finishing his doctoral studies on Appalachian landscape evolution in 2011. \nAfter teaching at Virginia Tech until 2016 and spending two years with the Virginia Geological Survey in Charlottesville\, Prince returned to upstate South Carolina in late 2019 to begin work in landslide mapping with Appalachian Landslide Consultants out of Asheville. \nHe is active in both applied and research-focused work in the southern Appalachians\, splitting time today between landslide studies and geologic mapping in southwest Virginia. An Appalachian Trail thru-hiker and avid whitewater paddler\, Prince has been fortunate to have the chance to develop a career in a region that is personally very meaningful to him. \nTickets go on sale online for this event here at 10 a.m. on Tuesday\, June 24. \nBridge Club Members\, click here to purchase “Presentation” tickets.\nYou will need to use your Bridge Club member number (located on your card below the barcode) to purchase. \nNon-Bridge Club Members\, click here to purchase “Presentation” tickets. \nGrandfather Presents Schedule \n\n9 a.m. | Grandfather Mountain opens for the day\, and active Bridge Club “Presentation” ticket holders are allowed access to the park if they’d like to make a day out of their experience. SUMMARY:Grandfather Presents: The Grizzly Forager Family
DESCRIPTION:The Grizzly Forager is an aspirational social media account with the primary aim of inspiring parents to get outside with their kids via the art of foraging. Arthur\, Sybbie\, and their mum and dad\, John and Christina\, create wholesome and visually appealing posts and reels that aim to educate\, inspire and encourage kids of all ages to safely experience the outdoors and develop a deep love and connection with nature. Their content covers a broad range of topics\, from wild food identification and safety\, cooking and recipes\, wildlife\, nature-inspired lifestyle activities\, and ecological and environmental issues. Christina is a Clinical Psychologist and John is an educator\, professional photographer\, foraging enthusiast and author of “The Grizzly Forager’s Guide to Family Foraging.” \nMeet Arthur \n \nArthur is a quiet\, thoughtful\, and caring young boy with a curious nature. He has always been outside from a very early age\, taking naps outside in his pram in all weathers as a baby – even snow! Arthur has a very deep love of nature and wildlife\, particularly ocean creatures and reptiles\, which stems from his keen interest in dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. He cares deeply about our impact on the environment and how we responsibly source our food. Arthur has a clear thirst for knowledge and uses the forest and our foraging exploits not only to have fun\, but to absorb information and learn new things\, which brings him joy and happiness. \nMeet Sybbie \n \nSybil (or Sybbie for short\, even though that’s longer!) was born at home during the first Covid-19 lockdown of 2020. She was a little earlier than expected\, and surprised us all by arriving\, of all places\, in the shower! Sybbie is outgoing\, confident\, cheeky and creative and enjoys singing\, dancing and theatrics. Like her brother\, she has a deep love of animals and wildlife\, particularly insects\, but also has a very strong maternal instinct\, finding beauty\, love and compassion for small things\, from spiders and birds to flowers and mushrooms. She describes herself as a ‘Foraging Princess’; but can just as easily transform\, when the mood takes her\, into a fierce ‘Warrior Princess’\, swapping out dresses\, hair clips and sparkly shoes for swords\, feathers and moccasin boots. In the forest\, rather than being driven by a thirst for knowledge like her brother\, she instead enjoys the thrill of the chase\, the sense of adventure\, and the pure joy of seeing and experiencing new things. \nJoin the whole Grizzly Clan for a fireside chat all about foraging\, parenting\, wellbeing and living the slow life in wild and rugged Northumberland back home. Discover how Arthur and Sybbie came to be expert foragers and how collectively they became one of the largest and most influential foraging accounts on social media\, with a thriving community of over 600K followers. \nTickets go on sale online for this event here at 10 a.m. on Friday\, May 22. \nVIP Reception tickets are SOLD OUT. Presentation tickets remain\, and those links are listed below. \nBridge Club Members\, click here to purchase Presentation tickets.\nYou will need to use your Bridge Club member number (located on your card below the barcode) to purchase. \nNon-Bridge Club Members\, click here to purchase Presentation tickets. \nGrandfather Presents Schedule \n\n8 a.m. | Grandfather Mountain opens for the day\, and “VIP Reception” ticket holders are allowed access to the park. He produced the Emmy Award-winning documentary “Green Fire” and supported ten different foreign translations of Leopold’s famous book. Buddy’s leadership in the conservation movement includes service on state and federal advisory committees and participation in three White House Conferences on conservation and environmental education. \nDr. Stanley A. Temple is the Beers-Bascom Professor Emeritus in Conservation in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For 32 years he held the academic position once occupied by Aldo Leopold\, and during that time he won every teaching award for which he was eligible. He and his students have helped save many of the world’s endangered species and the habitats on which they depend. \nHe is currently a Senior Fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation\, where he leads crane tours and introduces Future Leaders Fellows to Leopold’s history\, phenology\, and wildlife ecology. He has also been a core contributor to the yearly Wisconsin Phenology Calendar. He has received conservation awards from the Society for Conservation Biology\, The Wildlife Society\, and Wisconsin Society for Ornithology. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithologists’ Union\, American Association for the Advancement of Science\, and Wisconsin Academy of Sciences\, Arts and Letters. He has been President of the Society for Conservation Biology and Chairman of the Board of The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin. Temple will share stories from his lifetime of work on conservation efforts to save endangered species across the world\, including one right here at Grandfather Mountain. Huffaker and Pope will chat about Leopold’s Land Ethic today\, why it continues to be important and what challenges are being faced at Grandfather. \nConsidered by many to be the father of wildlife ecology and modern conservation\, Aldo Leopold was a forester\, philosopher\, conservationist\, educator\, writer and outdoor enthusiast. Among Aldo Leopold’s best-known ideas is the “land ethic\,” which calls for an ethical\, caring relationship between people and nature. This land ethic continues to inform the work\, values and goals at the Aldo Leopold Foundation today\, just as it informs the work of countless individuals and organizations worldwide. \nAldo Leopold’s “A Sand County Almanac” will be on sale at the event. \nFirst published by Oxford University Press in 1949\, Aldo Leopold’s “A Sand County Almanac” has become a conservation classic\, selling over 2 million copies worldwide and being translated into 15 languages. The Aldo Leopold Foundation’s mission is to foster a land ethic through the legacy of Aldo Leopold. SUMMARY:Grandfather Presents: Margaret Lowman\, Ph.D.\, aka CanopyMeg
DESCRIPTION:One of the world’s first arbornauts\, CanopyMeg devoted over four decades to exploring forest canopies. Her research and exploration have taken her to more than 45 countries\, on all seven continents\, where she not only tirelessly saves forests but also mentors girls. \nLowman has published over 200 research publications. Her work has appeared in National Geographic\, Wired\, Popular Science\, The Wall Street Journal\, Forbes and many others; and her first book received a cover feature in The New York Times Sunday Book Review. Lowman has won numerous awards\, including the prestigious Explorers Medal from The Explorers Club\, Garden Club of America’s Margaret Douglas Medal for conservation education\, Ecological Society of America’s Odum Award for Excellence in Ecology Education and the Tällberg Foundation’s Global Leadership Prize. \nCurrently\, she serves as executive director/founder of TREE Foundation in Sarasota\, Fla\, established in 2000 as a 501(c)3 non-profit with the mission to link local underserved children to nature\, and to promote tree research\, education and exploration. Lowman recently launched Mission Green\, to build 10 canopy walkways in the world’s highest biodiverse forests over the next five years. \n“The Arbornaut\,” a memoir of her adventures\, is a bestseller. Her newest book\, “Tree Day” introduces a single tree in each chapter\, during a single hour\, highlighting 24 species from around the world. \nLowman’s outside interests are diverse. She’s the proud mother of two wonderful boys who grew up climbing trees around the world with their single-parent scientist-mom. She’s had an asteroid named after her\, comprising 16 acres encircling Jupiter (16304 Lowman). She loves birding\, beaches\, reading and enjoying nature. Her personal motto is “no child left indoors.” \nLowman’s Oct. 1 presentation is titled “In Honor of Jane Goodall – How Trees Keep our Planet and its Wildlife Healthy.” Mission Green is a global project to conserve the world’s most important forests by building canopy walkways. These walkways not only educate the public about the amazing 8th continent otherwise known as the treetops\, but they sustainably employ indigenous women via ecotourism\, and offer students access to forest canopies to make new discoveries. Speaker CanopyMeg Lowman pioneered the construction of canopy walkways that now bring economic incentives to forest conservation around the world. She will talk about Mission Green\, and the importance of both forest conservation\, plus linking kids to nature via the treetops and her friend Jane. \nTickets go on sale online for this event here at 10 a.m. on Friday\, July 31. \nGrandfather Presents Schedule \n\n9 a.m. | Grandfather Mountain opens for the day\, and “VIP Reception” ticket holders are allowed access to the park.
