One of the most exciting part of our mission is the chance to inspire others by sharing our knowledge of the natural world with the thousands school children that visit each year. Through naturalist programs and animal enrichments, we have the opportunity to talk face-to-face with our young guests and ignite them with our enthusiasm for stewarding creation in the present and future.
Grandfather Mountain has long desired to offer free or reduced-price field trips to Title I schools and programs that can demonstrate financial need. In that spirit, an Environmental Education Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Nathan Pribble of Apex, N.C., who died unexpectedly in 2014 at age 18.
These scholarships enable schools and organizations serving low-income communities to bring educational field trips to Grandfather, where students can explore a vast outdoor classroom and be inspired by the heart-stopping view from the mountain’s high elevation.
We are asking for the ongoing financial support of the larger community if we hope to continue making this unique life experience available to low-income school children in the coming years.
