Grandfather Mountain, Nature on a Whole Different Level

PLanning Your Visit

How Much Walking?

Picnicking, Scenery and Views - (very little walking required)

Overlooks are located along the road to the top. You can enjoy all of the views from your vehicle, or you can get out of your car if you like. Picnic tables are located close to where you would park your car.

stairs to bridgeThe Mile High Swinging Bridge (50 stairs)

You will need to climb a staircase containing 50 steps to reach the Mile High Swinging Bridge. If the climb is more than you are ready for, you can see very similar views from the parking area.

Wildlife Habitats (1/4 mile loop, occasionally steep)

The paths through the wildlife habitat area make a 1/4 mile loop. The path to the bear habitat is fairly steep, but it has switchbacks to reduce the incline. Benches are spaced along the route.

The paths through the habitats are paved and accessible by wheelchair. If you need help with the hills, please ask at the Museum gift shop and we will assist you.

Hiking Trails (trails vary in difficulty)

You do not need to hike the trails to enjoy Grandfather Mountain, but a short hike might make your visit more fun.

The Woods Walk

Circumscribing the attraction's picnic area on the lower slopes of the mountain, the Woods Walk offers families a leisurely 4/10-mile loop through mature Appalachian forest. With very gradual grades and wide paths, the Woods Walk will appeal to guests who are looking for a casual encounter with nature. At least 64 different flower and plant species grow at trailside, as well as 19 tree types.

The Bridge Trail

Beginning at Hiker Parking Area, the Bridge Trail moves quickly into a natural area where families can walk through red and white rhododendron, galax, red spruce, fraser fir, and yellow birch. Four-tenths of a mile in length, the trail switchbacks up the mountain, traveling under the Swinging Bridge before ending at the Visitor Center. There are some massive outcroppings of rock on this trail. Allow 20 minutes each way.

The Black Rock Trail

The Black Rock Nature Trail begins at the Hiker Parking Area and slopes out gradually to a wide angle view of the Swinging Bridge, MacRae and Attic Window Peaks, as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandmother Mountain to the southwest. The trail runs out a mile through northern hardwood and spruce forests and, most any time of year, through neighborhoods of songbirds. Allow 1 hour round trip.

The Ridge Trails

The Ridge Trails at the top of the Mountain are very challenging and are not recommended unless you are prepared for a rigorous outing. Ask for a trail map so you can read up on what each trail offers.
