Camera Clinic

August 15-16, 2009

Photo Opportunity at Camera Clinic

The Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic was founded in 1952 by the late Hugh Morton.

A freelance newspaper photographer himself, Morton wanted to know more about his craft and thought other photojournalists from around the region would enjoy the opportunity to learn as well. He began by inviting nationally prominent photojournalists to come to Grandfather Mountain to share information and inspiration with their Carolina counterparts.

For many years the Carolinas Press Photographers Association held its annual meeting at this event, and although the NCPPA no longer sponsors the Clinic, many of its members continue to attend faithfully.

All professional and serious amateur photographers are welcome at the Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic. Tickets are $25 per person for non-professionals and admission is free to members of the Press Photographers Association, media and working press. Pre-registration is required.

Registration

Admission to the Camera Clinic is $25 per person for non-professionals and free to NPPA and NCPPA members, media and working press. Because there are a limited number of seats in the auditorium (165), we ask that people who plan to attend pre-register. Online pre-registration begins July 15, 2009.

On the day of the event, we ask pre-registered participants to check in at MacRae Meadows gate 3 (about 10 yards on the Linville side of the driveway to the Grandfather Mountain Office and 30 yards on the Linville side of the attraction Entrance Gate) to pick up a gate admission pass. This will allow you to identify yourself when coming and going from the attraction. Visitors who do not have a valid Camera Clinic admission ticket will be expected to pay regular park admission and will not be admitted to the auditorium.

Camping:

Although Grandfather Mountain does not operate a commercial campground, campsites are available at no charge in the Grandfather Mountain Picnic Area for people participating in this event. The picnic area has bathrooms and water fountains, but no other amenities. No formal spots are reserved, but participants usually have no trouble locating a place to pitch their tents or park their vehicles (because it is a big mountain).
