Grandfather Mountain Staff Grieves Death of Martha Oberhelman

Martha Oberhelman Grandfather Mountain is a bit less magical since the passing of Martha Oberhelman on June 22nd. Personifying service to our customers at Grandfather Mountain, Martha manned the Bear Hut for 27 years and will forever be remembered as the lady who charmed the birds out of the trees and coaxed chipmunks to eat from her hand. Moving boulder Hard Work Is Returning The Profile Trail to Former Glory

Profile Trailblazers Jim Morton and Kinney Baughman returned to the river crossing they call "Merle's Milestones" this summer to help rangers move several one and two-ton boulders that give hikers stepping stones across the current while they make their way toward the ridge. The team's efforts are driven by a desire to return Merle's Milestones to the level of artistic and engineering elegance they represented before Hurricane Ivan washed the original crossing down stream in 2004. Mammal Survey Uncovers Exciting Oddities

Star-nosed moleIn its ever-ending quest to learn more about the web of life in the Tarheel state, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission came to the Mountain last month to see what small mammals might be in residence on Grandfather's slopes. Among the many interesting species they discovered were the star-nosed mole and the hoary bat. Read more about it!
