Trails are open, caution is advised.

Grandfather Mountain State Park backcountry trails are open, however, there are still many trees down and there is a significant amount of snow and ice on the trails. Please use caution when hiking the trails keeping in mind that there may be overhead hazards from hanging tree limbs as well as hazards on the trail. Please dress appropriately for the weather and complete a permit which is available at the trailhead of the Profile Trail and on the Tanawha Trail just past Boone Fork.

Mountain Regulations

Prohibited Materials or Activities:

  • Drugs And Alcoholic Beverages - They don't mix well with the environment.
  • Removal Of Plants- Please leave flowers and plants for others to enjoy.
  • Climbing- For environmental and safety reasons, climbing, bouldering, bolting, and rappelling are prohibited on the mountain.
  • Hunting And Fishing- Grandfather is a state-designated wildlife preserve.
  • Mountain Bikes And Horses- Not allowed in order to protect fragile soil, water breaks, and trail steps.

Grandfather Mountain rangers patrol trails on a routine basis to offer help and directions, check for permits, and monitor use of the backcountry.
