Flame Azalea
(Rhododendron calendulaceum)

flame azalea Flame Azalea

in budThe most widely cultivated of the native azaleas, these shrubs grow in deciduous forests and on forest margins in the mountain region in May and June. The flowers are one inch or more across in varying shades of orange and yellow.

The flame azalea gets its name not only from its color, but from the fact that its unopened buds resemble the flame on a candle.

  • What a rush! Just getting up the mountain was an experience. The view from the top was great. Coming down we stopped at the zoo and had a great time. People were so friendly. We met a family from Africa-and I thought I drove a long way! Would love to come back some day.
