Naturalists Offer Daily Nature Programs This Summer

This summer, the Grandfather Mountain naturalists will present a special nature program each day.

“The goal is to continue our interpretation of the mountain for the general public,” said Naturalist Jesse Pope. “Our desire is to enhance our guests’ visit to Grandfather Mountain by letting them know more about what is out there, and maybe increase their appreciation of the natural world.”

The naturalists get very excited by the opportunity to help guests learn about Grandfather Mountain, and their enthusiasm is reflected in the broad range of topics they are prepared to talk about. Some of the programs they will offer include:

    • nature walks,
    • wildflower walks,
    • history talks,
    • interaction with live owls,
    • talks on forest composition,
    • nature near the Swinging Bridge,
    • and animal workshops on butterflies, salamanders, and each of the animals that reside in Grandfather’s animal habitats.

Some programs will start with a slide presentation in the Nature Museum auditorium and some will include short trips into the field.

The naturalist programs will be a regular part of the daily schedule beginning June 2 and continuing through August 31. The programs are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (times may vary on occasion) and are included in the price of admission. Although the topics will be different from day to day, each presentation will last approximately one hour.

To learn what the topic of the day will be along with where and when the naturalists’ presentation will start, check the sign boards posted beside the Mildred's Grill in the lobby of the Nature Museum.

“We really hope that participating in one of our programs will make the visit to Grandfather Mountain more fun and memorable for our guests,” said Pope. “We’re all about helping guests make their own perfect adventure.”
