NATIONAL TRAILS DAY VOLUNTEER PROJECT JUNE 7

On Saturday, June 7, 2008 Grandfather Mountain will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of its organized trail program.

Luke Appling“It is hard to believe that Grandfather Mountain’s trail system has been managed for 30 years,” said Luke Appling, head ranger at Grandfather Mountain. “After three decades of hard work, imagination and conservation oriented goals; this trail system is the pearl of the High Country hiking experience.”

With the 30th Anniversary of the organized trail program, and June 7th being National Trails Day, Grandfather Mountain has organized a volunteer project for those who love hiking and love spending time on Grandfather Mountain.

hiking Grandfather Trail“Volunteers will be repainting the trail blazes on a few of our trails,” Appling said. “Our rangers will act as interpretive guides on the hike, answering questions and pointing out prominent features and wildlife as they go.”

Grandfather Mountain will also have a ranger stationed at the Mast General Store located in Valle Crucis. In celebration of National Trails Day an informative booth showcasing Grandfather’s trails will be set up and a ranger will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the backcountry trail system.
